As midnight approached, we lay awake in his bedroom, talking. We began to hear noises around 12:15. My friend was certain that someone was in the house and retrieved a shotgun from his gun cabinet. Handing me a flashlight we crept out into the hall. "It's coming from the living room," he whispered, "You step out and shine the light and I'll keep the gun on them." I stepped out into the wide entrance way and turned on the light. The room was empty, but in the corner his grandfather's old rocking chair moved to and fro, as though someone sat in it, rocking gently. Then, a few seconds later, it stopped. The wall clock said 12:20.
A short while later his parents returned home. His mother was in tears and went straight to her room. His father stopped in to check on us and we retold our experience. "That was probably just Benjamin, stopping in to say goodbye. That was his father's rocking chair you know," was what he told us.
